Do you have a struggling reader in the house.  Instead of having the child read a story, that they may not be interested, try writing the instructions out for making popcorn, mac and cheese, or any other simple food.  In the beginning you may have to shadow read with your child, but as they can read a word by themselves, underline it.  The idea being that the more words they can read by themselves, and therefore underline, the better they will feel about themselves, and therefore develop greater self confidence.
